Best Valentine’s news is we are going to collect Petal later 💜 She’s fragile, bruised and limping, but she is eating, giving the nurses kisses 💜, and she’s been able to come off the really strong painkillers over the past day.

We’re just transforming the lounge into a comfy recovery suite, then we’ll be going to collect her. Then, we’re pretty much going into lockdown for 1-2 months so she can be supervised by one of us, or both of us, all the time 💜

So so glad she’s coming home, obviously we’re prepared for the ups and downs, the wounds and the weakness, but it’ll be great to be able to give her some TLC.

Thank you for your messages and everyone who has asked about her. I was going to post an update yesterday, but I ended up falling asleep very early. Pretty knackered 🙃

A little update on how it’s gone for Petal today 💜

Her surgery was 3 hours and the specialist said it went as well as they hoped.

She had her implant put in and a bone graft from her shoulder which was then packed into the implant, to hopefully help the bone fuse and give the implant less chance of slipping 🤞

We were then waiting to hear if Petal could walk, and a little while ago we got the call to say she had stood and had managed a little walk and they were so pleased with her 💜

I’m so proud of her and was fully expecting her not to walk today, so the fact she has is amazing.

We will get another update in the morning to see how the night has gone.

It’s a long road to recovery and things could go wrong at any point, but I’m so relieved that today has gone really well. Phase one done 💜

Morning. We’re having a cuddle in bed because tomorrow Petal goes in for her neck/back surgery.

I’ve really agonised over whether it’s the right decision and I don’t think I’ll ever be fully comfortable with any of the options, so I’m just trusting and hoping that surgery is the best option and it will be ok.

She’ll be in for 3 nights. An implant is being used to separate the bone in the affected area. It’s a new ish implant that hasn’t been used too much, but it’s the one that most resembles what’s used in humans so our surgeon feels it will be the best for her.

We’ve had a long conversation with him about it, I’ve read a study he sent me and looked at what little research there is. Again, it’s a hard decision to make, but it has to be made.

Recovery should take between 1-2 months. No climbing on anything in that time, or playing, or doing anything that could fracture the healing bone. So, whilst she’s having the procedure, we’re taking all the furniture out of the lounge, setting up mattresses, flat cushions and a recovery space for her.

I’m so very worried, but I just hope we’re doing the right thing. It’ll be awful dropping her off tomorrow and changing everything, but taking everything into account it will hopefully give her the best chance of stopping the progression 💜 This is definitely the hardest decision I’ve had to make whilst caring for our animals. Hope we’ve got it right x

Let’s just say my legs hurt today 😂. On the way down through the muddy woods, I was asking people coming back up whether it was worth the climb. When we were on our way back, people going down were asking us the same!

Earlier, I braved the cold and rain like a flower-seeking hero 😂 and went to chat with @sheptonsnowdrops Director, Amanda Hirst.

We spoke about the special affection Shepton has for snowdrops, we chatted about The Snowdrop King, and what’s going to be happening at the upcoming Snowdrop Festival.

I also got to see these gorgeous, massive, handmade snowdrops in the window at @create_no8, as well as a sneak preview of some of the costumes that are going to be featuring in a very special fashion show, kicking off the festival.

Today it’s been two years since our beautiful Flower Pot Noodle passed 💗🌼

I wish she was still here “chattering her teefs” - something she did when she was happy, which was a lot! 😊

How lucky were we to have this beautiful character in our lives? We’ll be getting some flowers in her honour today, and popping them on the window sill next to her photo/ashes.

Winter Awe

Sunrises of orange
so juicy I could squeeze them
but forever be thirsty
for more of their sweetness.

Snowdrops in their hundreds,
huddled together for warmth,
collectively calling:
“Spring is round the corner
just hold on that little bit longer”

A robin flying, unafraid,
from our spade to barrow,
barrow to spade…
Showing off his red-feather vest
to the tune of a loved one
long laid to rest.

The fire flickering
In the early dark
as we dream of sunsets at six
or even seven,
and the blossom
merely weeks away
with its heady scents of heaven.

The key right now
is these small things.
The moments
in the day, week, month…
To notice.
To treasure,
with a sense of forever awe.

I recently saw a post by @somersetwt that spoke about how getting outside for just 15 minutes a day can improve your wellbeing and mental health. Couldn’t agree more with that.

In Somerset, we’re so lucky to have nature on our doorstep and it was lovely speaking with @fiwalksandpaintsthesw recently, about how it makes her feel and how it inspires her oil paintings.

To be honest, Fi’s got such a calm voice that just listening to her speak improves my wellbeing! 😊

Hope everyone’s ok this morning. As I hear more rain on the windows and look at the weather forecast, I’m looking forward to Thursday when the rain is meant to stop, and we should get some much needed sunshine.

Most of the water seems to have gone down in our garden overnight, (although there are a few areas of muddy pools) so I’m really hoping it’ll stay that way 🤞

This photo is from last year. As it stands now, we’ve lost some big trees in the storms (of late last year) and one of them still needs to be removed from the lawn, so it’s an ever changing (pretty messy!) picture 😬

Hoping there’ll be no more damage. We got through the strong winds on Friday and yesterday unscathed at least x

Some news about Petal 💜 It’s been a difficult week.

Last Spring, Petal started having a few problems with her leg and some pain in her neck. After seeing two different vets, physio and a specialist who did a full set of MRi scans, tests, bloods and spinal fluid, they couldn’t find anything. She rested and had pain relief.

After more vets visits, late last year we decided to try again and took her to Langford Small Animal Referral Hospital. This week she had more tests, MRI and CT scans and she’s been diagnosed with Wobblers Syndrome. It’s a progressive, genetic disease. Petal has some damage to her spinal cord and in her neck area, and next week she’ll be operated on.

It’s a big operation, she’ll have some metal plates between the affected bones to try and stop them rubbing/overlapping (in simple terms) and to say we are very worried is an understatement.

She’ll be there for 3 days and 3 nights. She’s never away from us and to be honest when I think about it, I feel like curling up and having a cry, but it’s got to be done 💜 It’s her best chance at stopping the progression, eventually relieving some pain and prolonging her life, after a 1-2 month recovery period (we hope).

It goes without saying that I love my best girl so much. She is the leader of the pack, the smartest dog I’ve ever known, my not so mini me, and she’s at the centre of everything here. Nothing happens without her, nothing gets past her, and Izzy and Fawn look up to her.

There’ll be lots of cuddles and quality time together till she goes in next week 💜

For the past 9 years, I've regularly visited Ham Wall Nature Reserve and the surrounding areas, to see the starling murmurations. Like many people, I'm a little bit obsessed!
