Soulful eyes, a free spirit, galloping over dramatic terrain... I’m talking about my first impression of the Exmoor ponies of course and a little while ago, I realised that I kept liking social posts about these beautiful animals, but didn’t actually know very much about the free-living ponies who have made Exmoor their home.
I decided that needed to change, so I got in touch with Dawn Westcott - author, wild pony whisperer, founder of the Exmoor Pony Project and twice International Horse Agility World Champion.
I hoped Dawn would fancy chatting to me on my radio show – about the character of the breed, about some of the ponies who have been particularly special to her and about some of the issues they face. Happily she said yes, and I’m so glad she did because it’s meant I’ve started to learn so much more about one of the UK’s oldest and endangered native breeds. I’ve also been able to share our conversation with you on my Somerset cool show as well and if you haven’t heard it yet, you can head here to hear the programme in full.
It’s insightful, emotive and powerful, and it’s been an absolute pleasure chatting with Dawn.
Also, watch this space because later in the year, I’ll be heading to the Exmoor Pony Project in person, meeting the ponies and creating a follow-up show and blog. I can’t wait to visit and to share that with you as well.
In the meantime, grab a cuppa, sit back, relax and listen to Dawn share her knowledge and experiences of Exmoor ponies. I hope you enjoy discovering more about them. For me, I think the story of Monsieur Chapeau is my absolute favourite, although it’s a tough call!
